It's very important that you read, understand and honor the directories terms of service. Otherwise you risk having your article rejected.

You will also discover what types of articles the directory won't accept. Sales oriented articles, blatant self-promotion and press-releases are typically not accepted.

You're Ready

Once you've opened your account and read the terms of service, you're ready to submit your first article.

On the article submission page you'll usually find a place where you must select the category your article relates to.

You will also be asked to include your article title on a separate line. Remember, your article title should include your keyword or phrase.

Your title should also be as strong as possible. On most sites you can not use all caps in your title, you can only capitalize the first letter of every word.

Most sites also require a short paragraph that summarizes your article. On some sites you can use a paragraph right from your article. Others require you to write an original paragraph. Most sites do not allow the use of HTML in your article summary.

Many article submission sites also ask for keywords. Always start by listing your main keyword or phrase first, followed by a comma, then the next most important keyword, a comma, then the next.

Now it's time to place the body of your article in the proper box. Some sites will allow limited use of HTML in your article body. Typically this will include bold, italics, and bullet points.

Once you've placed your article body in the box, take the time to look at your article's layout. Are your paragraphs too long? Check your word count. Articles under 250 words are generally not accepted. Articles longer that 850 to 900 words should be broken up into two articles.

Quality Counts - Spelling Too

It's also very important to check your spelling. Once your article has been accepted for distribution, it's darn right embarrassing to discover that a typo or spelling error is being posted all over the web with your name on it.

Review Your Article

Before you complete your article submission, take a few minutes to read over your article. Does it flow logically? Is it easy to understand? Does it answer a question or solve a problem?

Now it's time to click the submission button.

Congratulations, you've just submitted your first article.

Because article directories receive hundreds of articles everyday and most use human editors, it may take anywhere from a day to several days before you receive an email stating that your article has either been accepted or rejected.
